Above I-70

If this image makes you feel a little uncomfortable, that's probably a good thing.
Just to give you an idea of how maniacally dedicated I am to the several of you who read this site, I built a large hovering platform to capture this photo....no, really, I am just kidding. I did not actually build a large hovering platform. But I would have, had there not been an overpass conveniently placed in the exact spot my camera needed to be to take this picture. That’s how dedicated I am to bringing you each fresh imagery on an almost daily basis.

I know that these folks are probably not as interesting as cowboys, and few people are. But I saw them on top of Mt. Sanitas a little over a week ago, and secretly snapped family pictures of them (and I thought I'd show you). Grandpa, actually beat the little one to the summit. I saw him touch the post first. (The missing part of the story is that Dad held the kids back by force to ensure a first place finish for Grandpa). Shhhhhh...he can't know, else it will spoil his victory.

More Cowboys

Buffalo Bill's birthday celebration continued today, relocating to his gravesite and museum atop Lookout Mountain. Since yesterday was so fun and informative, I thought I'd check it out today too. I'm glad I did.
I was invited to come and shoot guns with some of these guys. Real cowboy guns.

Happy Birthday Buffalo Bill!

Today I had the pleasure of celebrating Buffalo Bill's birthday at The Buffalo Rose Roadhouse in Golden, CO. I've never met so many cowboys in my life. Folks came from all over to reanact characters from that time period, including the legend himself (shown above). Crazy thing is, they weren't just acting like cowboys and cowgirls. Those with the most persuasive performances (such as Buzz, shown above center) hardly had to flinch from what appeared to be the everyday persona. Back when Buzz was a youngster, he used to wear a side- arm (pistol in side holster) and could readily buy dynamite no questions asked. Buzz says that he brings that same sidearm to events like this. I took his word for it.

Here, a judge scratches his head as Johnny Merchant from Salina, UT plays Badger, the mountain man. Although not shown in this image, Johnny's buckskins were unbelievable. He tanned the leather from the buck with its own brains. If you are interested, here are instructions (although I don't know if these are authoritative).

After School Beats and Rhymes

These guys produce their own beats, write and perform their own rhymes and push positivity. And 3 of the 4 are hardly teens. Compliments to Gold Crown Foundation for making creative resources and technology more accessible for these kids.

Car Dealership

Here's an image I saw last week driving past a car dealership in Westminster, CO. After driving a few blocks trying to persuade myself that one sees things this strange all the time (to no avail), I turned around. A car salesman met me on my way in, who I guess had already figured out that I was not in the market for a new car. Although it truly pains me to do it, I told him a little half lie when he asked me what I was doing. Paranoid of corporate spies stealing in with high resolution cameras, most businesses like this wave off photographers. So I fumbled over my words for a minute, then thoroughly confused him about the nature of what I was doing at his car dealership. He finally gave up and went back into the warmth of the lobby. All this for a rather quirky photograph of balloons at a car dealership--but somehow this little piece of uncanny made my somewhat lackluster day of running mindless errands feel worthwhile.

Also...meet T-Rex!
I know, its confusing. He's actually a little dog. I don't know why his master named him that.

Wild Art and Free Throws

This afternoon I was assigned to go capture "wild art", which today meant: go make an image of how inordinately warm it is, or rather : shoot Goldenians out and about acting like its spring already and how happy they are to be alive. To my delight, in the town of Golden, this was not hard to find. People love the outdoors here. So much so that on warm afternoons like today, they dip their kayaks in the river that runs right through town. This shot was taken just upstream of the main drag.

To weather my frustrations with the drearily low light, fast action demands of high school basketball, I tried some personal compositions during those in-between moments when the action came to a stand still.

Wow, yesterday the clouds stretched and smeared magenta across the sky a lot like in that Ghost Buster's movie. In California they call this "The Sierra Wave", west wind collides with the mountains, is pushed up into the sky gushing in wave like formations at sunset (rough def.). Here, I don't know what to call it. I wanted to get a shot from within the city with streetlights as a secondary light source to offset the sky, but I just couldn't get there fast enough. However, a 5 minute red light, the very thing that held me back from getting on foot, also provided me with a safe little window. Only the second time that I have seen this in my life. I felt very fortunate, albeit at a traffic light.
Yeah, I know. I need to clean my windshield.

Up and Running

Hello all. Welcome to my photoblog. Here you'll find new images updated on a regular basis. This blog serves as a sort of visual journal as I get photographically acquainted with my new (and photogenic) homebase, Boulder, CO and as I progress with my photojournalism internship at Mile High Newspapers. Wide Prime is short for a fixed focal length wide angle lens (can't zoom in or out). Although I do not currently own such a lens, I like the assonant ring to it, and thought it absolutely necessary to brand my blog with nerdy photog gear jargon.
Here goes... Fruit Smoothies on a saturday afternoon.

On my way from the art gallery.
